The charm of picturesque Paris

Even before the revolution, the district was abandoned by large numbers of the upper class, making way for workers and craftsmen. Largely untouched by Haussmann's influence, the Marais retains its medieval structure. Renovated during the contemporary era, it has once again become a very popular area with a strong artistic drive among the many galleries and museums constructed there. Since the 19th century, the Marais district has also had a significant population of Ashkenazi Jews.

Things to see and do The Musée Picasso

Pablo Picasso Museum has works from the artist's whole life which are on display together with several pieces from his personal collection (Matisse, Cézanne, Miró, Braque, etc.). The Hôtel Carnavalet is particularly worth a visit. It has a museum dedicated to the history of Paris from prehistoric times to the modern day. This site is as much of a must-see as the 'Archives Nationales'. As for religious heritage, if you head towards the 4th arrondissement, you will find the Eglise Notre-Dame des Blancs Manteaux, then the Eglise des Billettes and its cloister, devoted to the Lutheran religion.

Connections and businesses

The lively Marais district has no shortage of businesses. There are a lot of restaurants with something for every budget. You can also shop in the famous Jewish boutiques, a truly unique experience. With regard to transport, the nearest metro stations are Chemin Vert and Saint-Sébastien Froissart on line 8.
