Searching for the past in Montparnasse
Intellectuals and artists such as Picasso, Apollinaire, Chagall, Léger, Duchamp, Giacometti, Dali, and Sartre turned it into a lively area with a large number of cafés. However, the 1960s changed the face of Montparnasse, transforming it into the new business district of the left bank. The most obvious proof of the cultural richness should be the Montparnasse museum, a true revival of the Cantine des Artistes, a canteen where artists and sculptors loved to congregate. Not far from there, the Musée Bourdelle pays tribute to Rodin's assistant through his monumental sculptures.
Places of interest
In modern minds, Montparnasse is also a station and a tower almost 700 feet high, which until 2011 was the highest in France. Another place of interest is the Musée de la Poste, which retraces the history of written communication. You can even make a stamp with your own head on it. Another historical site is the Musée Pasteur, which reveals the history of the great scientific adventure of vaccination. Last but not least, Cimetière du Montparnasse is the final resting place of Bartholdi, Sartre, Beauvoir, Brancusi, Saint-Saëns, Gainsbourg, and others.
Transportation and shopping
The Gare Montparnasse train station is a real communication hub. There are a large number of metro stations (Montparnasse-Bienvenüe, Edgar Quinet, Gaité, Pasteur, Falguières, Vavin, Raspail, etc.). As for food, the area has everything. There is a vast choice of all types of restaurants, and there are just as many food stores and supermarkets around the station’s square.
