A district built by Henry IV
Its lively atmosphere is maintained due to tourist traffic encouraged by its central location on the left bank, between the Eiffel Tower and the Latin Quarter. It was Henri IV who gave this district its first role. He wanted to provide accommodations for wounded and disabled soldiers (les invalides in French). Louis XIV then had the current building constructed, which was then taken back by Napoleon after the Revolution. The various mansions in the district are occupied by large institutions and embassies.
The majestic Hôtel des Invalides
The district is dominated by the dome of the Hôtel des Invalides. This exhibition space is home to one of the largest collections of military paraphernalia in the world. You can't come to Paris without taking a walk through the tiled Cour d'Honneur. It leads to the Saint-Louis church with its golden dome. Many visitors come here to see the tomb of Napoleon I. Between the monument and the Seine lie the solemn 1,600-foot Esplanade des Invalides. You get there by crossing the magnificent Alexandre III bridge, a gift to France from Russia.
Local businesses
There are few grocery stores in the area, where take-out venues, brasseries and restaurants are more common. As for shopping, the stores in the area are mainly luxury boutiques. Les Invalides is served by the Varenne, Rue du Bac, La Tour Maubourg, Saint-François-Xavier, and Invalides metro stations, at which lines 8 and 13 stop.
