Palais-Royal, history in the heart of Paris

In this district, which is lively by day and more subdued at night, narrow shopping streets sit alongside old passageways and a wonderful garden on the edge of which the murmurs of the city simply fade away. The former Palais Cardinal was the residence of Cardinal Richelieu. It became the Palais Royal when Anne of Austria moved in with her son, the young Louis XIV. The site is now home to the State Council, the Constitutional Council, and the Comédie Française. The writer Colette actually lived in an apartment overlooking the gardens of the Palais Royal.

The Palais Royal is made up of several buildings with arcades, centered around a tranquil rectangular garden. Roam around under the archways, discover unusual stores and a tea room, enjoy your time at the edge of the fountain and its plume of water. So many delightful experiences you just can’t miss! The Louvre is just to the south of the Palais-Royal district. This must-see museum of antiquities and paintings was once a palace where the kings of France lived.

An undefinable charm lingers in these places

During a visit off the beaten track, the Galerie Vivienne and the Galerie Véro-Dodat are full of interesting boutiques. Steeped in luxury, the shopping district of Palais-Royal has several gourmet restaurants. One that stands out is the famous Café Verlet (256 Rue Saint Honoré). However, there are relatively few local stores.

The area is served by the Palais-Royal-Musée du Louvre (lines 1 and 7), Pyramides (line 7), and Bourse (line 3) metro stations.
