Between Batignolles and Montmartre
In the past, the Square des Epinettes and the surrounding streets were covered in vines. White spruce (épinette blanche in French) was grown there, a pinot blanc grape variety from which the area may have taken its name. The establishment of the Gouin factories meant that the future Guy Môquet district would be a working class community until the early 1970s. The district became more bourgeois in the 1980s. It is still fairly lively thanks to the population of young, active executives.
The undiscovered calm of another Paris
You can enjoy relaxing between the Cité des Fleurs- a true village amidst the city streets, or the Square des Epinettes and its bandstand. In terms of heritage, the Saint-Michel des Batignolles church stands at the end of Rue Saint-Jean with its stunning brick bell tower. The Epinettes district has still kept one very popular site from its history which it shares with Batignolles: the Batignolles cemetery, where the graves of the poets Paul Verlaine and André Breton, and even Ray Ventura, can be found.
Transportation and business
Situated between two of the capital's famous districts, Guy Môquet naturally has good metro connections. The RER C and metro line 2 pass through Place de Clichy, as does line 13, which also stops at La Fourche, Brochant, Guy Môquet and Porte de Saint-Ouen. For shopping, Biocoop at 153 Rue de Legendre is well worth a visit for organic produce. There are also many other supermarkets and convenience stores in the area.
