The Denfert-Rochereau district gets its name from the huge square at the intersection of Boulevard Raspail, Boulevard Arago, and Boulevard Saint-Jacques. It was named in honor of the French Colonel Denfert-Rochereau, who led the resistance of the Belfort stronghold during the 1870 Franco-Prussian war.
