Redevelopment of a railway worker neighborhood
At almost 4 miles long, Avenue de Daumesnil is the longest road in Paris. It joins Place de la Bastille and the Château de Vincennes. Avenue Daumesnil is partly made up of arcades known as Le Viaduc des Arts.” Many Parisians come here to enjoy a drink. Built under the former railroad between Paris and Vincennes, the arches have been entirely restored. Visitors can look through the large windows and admire the works of 50 craftsmen and artists based under the arches. An unusual sight not to be missed!
A great place to hang out
The arcades come to life at night. The restaurants welcome people for romantic dinners or nights out with friends. Some bars even organize live music. The Viaduc Café is renowned for its cozy, intimate atmosphere. Above the viaduct, the old railroad has made way for a long walkway and park known as the coulée verte or the promenade plantée. This pedestrian route connects Place de la Bastille and the magnificent Daumesnil lake in the Bois de Vincennes. Every Tuesday and Friday, residents head to the Daumesnil market on Boulevard de Reuilly.
An extensive neighborhood off Avenue Daumesnil
Access to the Daumesnil district is primarily via Daumesnil station, served by metro line 6. Alternatively, you can follow or cross Avenue de Daumesnil using line 8 (Porte-Dorée, Michel Bizot, or Montgallet stations) and line 1 (Gare de Lyon or Bastille stations). Both residential and commercial, the area has many amenities: grocery stores, convenience stores, bakeries, newsstands, fresh produce stands, etc.
