The 2nd arrondissement: where business takes place
The 2nd arrondissement is the smallest and most compact of Paris' arrondissements yet boasts one of the highest concentrations of business activity in the city. It's home to several business districts including several bank headquarters and a former textile and garment district, known as the Sentier, which is now home to many tech startups and is fondly referred to as Silicon Sentier. Located on the right bank of the Seine, the 2nd arrondissement is made up of the following administrative districts: the Gaillon district, the Vivienne district, the Mail district and the Bonne-Nouvelle district. The historic Bourse (stock exchange) is also located in the 2nd arrondissement, as is the Paris Opéra and the Bibliothèque Nationale.
Daily life in the 2nd arrondissement
Five metro lines provide direct access to the district via 10 stations. Line 3 runs through the middle, and lines 4, 7, 8 and 9 run along its edges. Rue Montorgueil is a lively pedestrian street lined with cafes, bars, food shops and boutiques. A majority of the remaining passages (covered shopping arcades dating from the 19th century and precursors to the modern shopping mall) in Paris also call this district home.
