My three friends and I stayed in George’s lovely home for 4 months during our study abroad in Paris. Moving to a foreign country was incredibly daunting, and our process of finding an apartment was less than enjoyable. As soon as we came across the listing, I remember looking at the pictures of the windows in living room as a feeling set in – this is the one. It proved to become what felt like our home, and our little oasis from the craziness of Paris. I can say confidently that our experiences would not have been the same without knowing that we would come back to sleep safely at 85 rue Reaumur each night.
George puts every other landlord to shame. He was communicative, always responded promptly and left such helpful directions on how to use all the appliances – even coming by in the middle of our stay to show us how to drain the shower (which really does only need to be done every 2 months). The washer, dryer and dishwasher are amazing to have and incredibly rare features. When trouble came up with our door handle, George immediately sent us the handman and it was fixed within two days. The same deal happened when we needed a cleaning. We are forever grateful for his kindness and attentiveness. We were even able to come drop our bags off early, before the lease and George always worked with us to make sure the space was exactly what we needed. I truly cannot say thank you enough. You will confidently never have an experience with a landlord as pleasant as ours was with George.
The building itself is absolutely stunning, and such a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the streets. The courtyard walk up is beautiful and was well kept, and the trash is incredibly easy access down below. The apartment is up a couple flights of stairs but there’s an elevator that leads right up to the door.
Moving onto the apartment itself. The light from those windows is exactly as it is in the pictures. There’s pretty much everything you’d ever need and enough storage for five people to live there comfortably. It was definitely a bit of a squeeze for the four of us with my best friend and I sharing a bed, but it was completely worth it to wake up every morning in our haven. The listing does mention the fact that there is a primary school down below, and they do get chatty from about 8:30am through 5/6pm every day of the week accept Wednesdays. In all honesty, it was noticeable but not bothersome and we were out in the city most of the time anyways. The kids will give you a friendly little wave as well ?
It's hard to say what my favorite part about it was – but we must stress the location itself. You will find yourself in one of the greatest parts of Paris, in my opinion. Although Chatelet les Halles does get a bit iffy; if you’re walking through - it even at night - you’re pretty much fine. You are 15 minute walk from the Louvre, 15 minute walk from the Seine, also 20 minutes from Montmartre and 10 to the edge of Le Marais. There’s a metro literally right outside the door and it's a 10 minute walk to one of the busiest stations in Paris - les Halles, from which you can get directly to CDG which was quite convenient. The access to other areas of the city quite literally unbeatable.
Beyond that, Rue Montorgueil is filled with every cuisine you could imagine and multiple grocery stores which is great. There was no way we could even check everything off of our list, and every time you turn a corner there is something else to add to it. A quick highlight is Rue du Nil, which is across from Rue Reaumur and has one of the best boulangeries and coffee shops in the entire city where we became regulars, the greatest little alley way to exist – I miss it dearly. The neighborhood does get quite busy during the day - especially on the weekends - but the mornings are calm until about 9am and the evenings are delightful, especially when it’s warmer. I truly cannot recommend a neighborhood more as a central location and home base. We never felt unsafe despite the fact that we were directly in the city center; and although there are delivery drivers that tend to hang out below the stoop they never caused us any problems.
85 rue Reaumur was technically my first apartment, and it was quite literally a dream come true. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts George! We cannot stress enough how lovely it was to live in your home and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in Paris – long or short.
